- Design concept — not built
Art Deco in a 1,150 square foot apartment fails when it is taken literally. This concept keeps the geometry and drops the excess: curves in the furniture rather than the joinery, a champagne and blush palette rather than black and gold, and brass reduced to a single fine line where two materials meet. Walnut grounds it. The result is a small flat that feels composed rather than costumed — the period reference is in the proportion and the curve, not in the ornament.
Four decisions
that shape it.
Curves in the furniture, not the walls
A compact plan cannot afford curved joinery — it eats storage. Putting the curve in the seating gets the same softness for free.
Blush and champagne instead of black and gold
The warmer register reads contemporary and keeps a small room feeling open, where the high-contrast version would close it in.
Brass as a line, not a surface
A 6mm inlay where walnut meets plaster is enough. Brass panels in a room this size would overwhelm it.
One arch, used once
A single arched opening between living and dining carries the reference; repeating it would turn the flat into a set.
Walk through it.
The same home resolved through every principal room, so the palette and the detailing hold together rather than changing at each door.
